Scult_Alpha's

Muted down some of the Alpha by smoothing to make them blend into the sculpt more, and even out the texture.

Temperence Beast 002

Second attempt at the Temperance Beasts Z-Sphere skeleton, paid more attention this time to reference material, particularly the bone structure of the Aurochs so more include the Bull like body structure. Finding this attempt a lot better at capturing the litheness of the original concept.

I've settled with the beast idea for Temperence, based directly from my concept piece earlier. I personally would have preferred to use the mech idea, but I do not have enough time, as well I prefer the more organic appearance of this idea, too illustrate the strain of the Temperance I want it to represent I want it to have various adornments like chains and straps as well as sigils and text burned into its skin. I feel the Zphere build still needs some tweaking to fit the concept better. I'm also going to put together a mood board of references, such as skin textures, bone of various animals.

Noticing that the legs are far too stocky and deviate to far from the original concept, also still getting the hang of some of the tools. Have decided to abandon this attempt and start afresh.

Beast Concept WIP

Temperance Mech concept

The idea behind this concept linking back to my previously mentioned concept, using the a multiple armed figure, linking back to the Hindu deities and concept of an avatar of temperance. The Mech is heavily armed yet its weapons are all in a passive position, this to suggest the restraint from the havoc it could unleash. The head is also looking up, away from a potential target, I have drawn it like this to also emphasize in a sense that it above its intended purpose.

Blind practise sculpt, exsperimenting with Z-brush as a tool on a pre-existing Z-sphere build.

Looking further and in more details in Hindu deities for inspiration for my final sculpt. I have short listed a few deities to use as reference in terms of appearance. I am also rapidly finding aspects of the virtues that can be easily linked to these form. The statues and illustrations for the Hindu pantheon are especially intriguing as well as the depictions of their Avatars and Deva's. The concept of the Avatars being the direct decent of embodiment of a concept or deity, which also extends to other religions.

(From top to bottom: Shiva, Shakti, Ganesh, Kali and Kali again)

Shakti's image is probably the one that I feel is most inspirational, her character portrays a comforting serenity yet she is armed with multiple weapons, so there is a potential for destruction, she is a positive and universal force, and is in part responsible for the creation of the universe itself and exists outside it.

Within terms of the projects goal of bringing in a representation of the seven virtues, of which I have chosen Temperance:

temperance (ˈtɛmpərəns)
n
1. restraint or moderation, esp in yielding to one's appetites or desires
2. abstinence from alcoholic drink
[C14: from Latin temperantia, from temperāre to regulate]
I'm thinking of representing this with a mutilple armed humanoid figure, carrying a variety of weapons yet having them restrained. However this strikes me as very overused concept and is far too obvious to adopt. The silhouettes that I drawn as well as the iteration would be easy to adapt for the sculpt.
Another idea is to design a fictional creature that is almost wreathed in violence, yet is calm and transic of innate destructive ability, however I would like to show while this is not breaking the figure it is under a noticeable strain, like a muscle being flexed as a direct representation of that while effort is exercised it is not a unbearable torment. This would also easily compliment my Z-Sphere creature attempts.

And finally the idea of mecha, since a mecha, unlike a robot is used as manifestation or the extension of its pilot through direct interface and control (Also taps directly into the Hindu avatar concept), and given my personal sudden interest and creation of mechs in my own personal work I believe this would flow easier for me. In all this in the concepts that appeals to me the most. I could likely also bring the previous two concepts into this incorporating all my ideas.

Following a group crit session yesterday on our projects I have decided due to that my well of ideas and motivation has effectively run dry to take into account more abstract interpretations on the seven heavenly virtues. As well as look at more outside sources than previous games for reference. I plan to put together a few mood boards on potential influences and investigate through silhouettes, naturally due the the fact the project is now a good few weeks in, I'll be pursuing this quickly and trying to be on a least iterations coming mid next week, from there I can choose a final character/item to model in Z-brush.

Another Z-sphere skeleton.

The end goal for BA5 is to produce a character created in Z-brush and imported as a working character into a Game Engine (Unreal Engine, UDK) . The character has to be based upon or represent one of the seven heavenly virtues. These being
  • Chastity
  • Temperance
  • Charity
  • Diligence
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Humility
Following the industry standard pipeline for character creation, such a silhouettes, developing into iterations and finally building the finished concept into a Z-brush sculpt. I have chosen to take influence from the Hindu Faith, specifically their deities and symbolism, despite the seven virtues being heavily derived from Christian text. Also the character design from Warframe and the Art for Zone of the enders as well as anything other I find in the meantime that is influential.

I have already started to iterate on some of my Silhouettes, but plan to more and continue to iterate, with at least ten potential character designs, before I move on to a model sheet and final sculpt. I will be including excess and personal art to register developmental progress in other areas which will lend to the how my skills are exercised in the time frame of BA5.

Iterations from Chosen Silhouettes.

Do actually have some uni related stuff on the go, as well as general updates on BA5 itself, which I'll be covering in a post tomorrow, but for now just doing practice exercises with form.
